The Speik

The area of Speikboden got its name from a little alpine flower: the Speik

   

Description

The Blue Speik is a type of plant that belongs to the genus of the primulae. Other names are Red Speik and sticky primula (Primula glutinosa).

The plant lasts several years and reaches a height of 2 to 10 centimetres. It has numerous sticky and short glandular hairs on its leaves. The basilar leaves are about 6 centimetres long and serrated at the front. It bears fragrant, cup-shaped, blue-violet flowers, either singly or in umbels of up to eight in midseason. The Speik blossoms from June to August (in the area of Speikboden till the middle of July).

Occurrence

The flower prefers moist, rocky soil and occurs up to an altitude of 3,000 metres. The spikenard can be found at the Speikboden, near the Speikboden summit. Furthermore, it can also be found in the Central Alps.
